The Marangu Route (the “Coca-Cola Route”) is the most established trail on Kilimanjaro and the only one offering hut accommodations with dormitory-style beds. The 6-day option adds an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, greatly improving summit success rates compared to the 5-day version. It’s ideal for those who want a shorter trek but with more comfort and better chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
About Mt. Kilimanjaro Climb
The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most popular trail on Kilimanjaro. It is the only route offering hut accommodations with beds and meals, making it a more comfortable option. Starting on the southeastern side, the trail passes through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert before the final push to Uhuru Peak. While it is the shortest and most direct path to the summit, the limited acclimatization time makes it more challenging.
Marangu Route Highlights
- Overnight stays in huts instead of tents for added comfort
- Extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut
- Pass through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert landscapes
- Stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks
- Sunrise summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m)
- Direct descent back through lush rainforest
